What to Include in a Holiday Party Invitation
Start with the basics for any invitation – who, what, when, where. The why is the holiday!
Who – and how many of them – will influence your choice of a venue and impact your options for décor, games, food, etc. Is your gathering for close friends, a wider circle of acquaintances, family, coworkers?
What kind of celebration do you have in mind? Holiday parties run the gamut from game nights to formal dinner and dance events. Your invitation’s images and text should communicate your vision. Make sure to note any clothing expectations, whether that’s an ugly sweater or black-tie costume.
When needs to happen very early – before the season comes rushing in and calendars fill up. Pick your party date several weeks ahead and check it out with a few people you plan to invite to see if there are major events already scheduled for the date you have in mind. Save the Date cards help prioritize your party, or send your invitations well ahead of time, up to 6 weeks before the event.
Where you have your party depends on how many guests, the type of gathering, and, of course, your budget. An evening of finger foods and board games can fit nicely into an apartment that might not serve for a sit-down dinner. Think through your options, and make a plan you’ll enjoy that won’t break the bank. If you’re itching to host a major occasion that falls outside your limitations, consider asking a friend or two to co-host.
Save-the-Date Cards
Holiday Save-the-Date cards aren’t necessary for every gathering, but they do help secure your party on the calendars of your guests. They’re especially important if your event requests formal attire or other preparations. If you decide to use them, a good rule of thumb is to time Save-the-Dates (electronic or hard copies) to arrive 6-8 weeks prior to the party date, with your invitations following at about 3-4 weeks before the event.
